Well I’ve had a relaxing few days spent on a little jaunt in North Wales. Well, when I say relaxing, I do mean quite a bit of walking…and fresh air….and a certain amount of driving, but then again I do mean relaxing in the sense of a very enjoyable few days exploring around Caernarfon and Anglesey.
If you are a Southerner who rarely ventures further north than Birmingham and gets a nose bleed if you head further West than Reading, then I am referring to the frozen wastes of the North West – across the border into the vallies where Ivor the Engine puffs away and the dragons eat children and, if they don’t get eaten by dragons, they are sent to mine slate. To those who are ignorant of the joys of Wales, then open your minds because they’re not all called Gavin and Stacey.
Now, I based myself in a Caernarfon at the recently developed Victoria Docks. A smart new(ish) development of two hotels, private apartments overlooking the Menai Straits and a theatre, shops, etc. Although there were a couple of issues with the hotel, as a base its excellent – just a short walk into the lovely town of Caernarfon and the castle…and the complex is on the waterfront. The main roads that take you into Anglesey and across the peninsula towards Abersoch and Llanengan are all very close.
Now I discovered by accident that the area is a big hit with the surfers – and I saw a lot (in every sense) of surf dudes as I made my way about. (To clarify – there were not swarms of them – just that they like to get changed out of their wetsuits in full view of everyone! No issue, but needless to say I have come home with an urgent need to exercise more and start back on my diet…so no bad thing there then, eh?)
And now a dopey comment – I hadn’t appreciated how many people spoke Welsh in Wales. I know, sounds a stupid thing to say, but I am sure I noticed a lot more Welsh speakers than before. Maybe I am imagining it. Anyhow, they are a proud bunch - the Welsh - and we English could learn something from that.
And so, some images of my little jaunt…some beautiful views of Wales….but no naked surf dudes, I am afraid, because this just isn’t that kind of blog ;-)
